How to Decide if a Mini Session is Right for Your Family:

Mini sessions are widely favored by numerous families as a photo session option, and as autumn approaches, you can expect to come across numerous mini session advertisements. If you reside in the Buffalo or Rochester region and are considering updating your family photos, you may be pondering whether a mini session is suitable for your family. Below are responses to frequently asked questions I receive about mini sessions compared to full sessions.

What is the difference between a full and mini session?

Mini sessions are a popular option among family photographers, offering a shorter version of a standard full photo session. They are typically scheduled for specific dates and times and come with a smaller gallery compared to full sessions.

Mini sessions are ideal for updating your photo collection seasonally or capturing special moments affordably.

Full family sessions are longer and more flexible in terms of scheduling, offering unrestricted access to your digital gallery.

What is included in a mini session with Kimberly A. Muth Photography?

Mini sessions are usually available once a month in the warmer seasons, on specific dates, times, and locations. Each mini session lasts for 20 minutes and includes 8+ digital images.

Styling assistance is provided as part of your session. Upon booking, you will receive login access to Style and Select, an easy-to-use online styling tool. Here, you can plan and match outfits for your family.

What locations do you offer mini sessions?

Depending on the season, the sessions take place at different spots in and around the Buffalo and Rochester areas. During the early spring or late fall, indoor mini sessions may be available at a studio. Most sessions occur at some of the preferred locations for family photography, chosen for their natural scenery and seasonal suitability.

When can I book a mini session?

Mini sessions are offered exclusively to my mailing list seasonally. Dates, locations and booking opportunities are announced by email and on social media for booking opportunities.

Typically mini sessions sell out quickly (sometimes just a few minutes) so it’s best to set a reminder to check your email if you want to snag a spot, especially for the busy fall season!

Which session should I choose?

One of the most common questions I receive from families is about the type of photo session they should choose. The answer to this question can be quite complex as it largely depends on your specific preferences and needs.

A mini session is perfect for families seeking a brief session to capture a few updated photos. This is particularly suitable for milestone occasions such as a baby's growth stages when a full family session might not be necessary. Consider milestones like 6 months, 12 months, or birthdays.

Given their shorter duration, mini sessions typically offer a more limited selection of photos and settings compared to full sessions.

Opting for a full session provides you with more flexibility and variety. When you schedule a complete family photo session, you have the freedom to select the date, location, and time based on my availability. With a wide range of locations in and around Buffalo and Rochester, you can select the setting that best suits your family. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to choose the ideal golden hour time slot. The golden hour, occurring 1-2 hours before sunset, provides the most beautiful lighting for photo shoots. Full family sessions also afford you more time. A longer session allows us the luxury of time to connect, lets the little ones explore and become comfortable. Full sessions typically result in a larger gallery and a wider selection of photos, including various scenic backdrops.

Which session is better for little ones?

Deciding between a mini session and a full session can be challenging as it largely depends on your family dynamics. Mini sessions are ideal for children with short attention spans, ensuring they remain engaged and entertained throughout the shorter duration. As a photographer, I can capitalize on their initial curiosity and engagement during these concise sessions.

On the other hand, if your child is more reserved and slow to open up, a full session might be more suitable. The longer timeframe allows me to establish a deeper connection with the child, giving them the necessary space and time to feel comfortable and showcase their true selves. Despite the extended duration, full sessions often incorporate a playful environment that appeals to younger children, keeping them engrossed and involved.

What if I want more photos than what is included?

Mini sessions typically include 5-8 digital images in the base price. If you want more photos, you have various options. You can purchase individual digital images or upgrade to the complete gallery with over 30 pictures for a fixed fee. There's no need to decide before seeing your gallery.

After your session, I will give you all the edited images. You can then select your favorite photos. If you want more images than included in your package, you can easily upgrade from your gallery and immediately access the additional images. Most clients choose to upgrade after viewing their gallery.

Do we need to bring anything to our session?

There is no requirement for you to bring anything to your mini session unless you wish to include something. I typically bring a small stool that is suitable for very young children to sit on or hold onto. If you have a baby who cannot stand, it may be beneficial to bring a neutral blanket from home.

Can we bring our dog?

I welcome all family members, including dogs, as long as they are permitted at the location. Most locations are dog-friendly with a few exceptions. If you want to bring your pup to your mini session, just let me know in advance so I can check with the venue.

If mini sessions sound like something that your family would be interested in, make sure to sign up for my email list and follow along on Instagram. Mini sessions are offered exclusively to my mailing list seasonally – and you won’t want to miss a chance to sign up!

I look forward to the opportunity to work with your family to create some new memories!
